Bacchus, dancing maenad, and maenad with zither

The relief frieze on the monumental Borghese Vase was the inspiration behind these three figures. Next to Bacchus are two of his followers, music-playing maenads. Their graceful postures and dance-like gestures tell of the exuberant, sensual festivities that were celebrated in the god’s honour.
