Album 1, Leaf 37

This drawing shows a finely worked Composite capital from the Farnese Gardens on the Palatine in Rome. Stylistic analysis has led to its attribution to the French professional draughtsman Nicolas François Daniel Lhuillier (c. 1736–1793). Composite capitals are so called because they combine the scrolled volutes of Ionic capitals and the acanthus leaves of Corinthian capitals.
