Album 1, Leaf 32

The most striking sheet on this leaf is the one containing images of elaborately decorated ship’s rams. Such devices were used to ram enemy ships and were displayed as war trophies after victory. They are a recurring and prominent motif in Piranesi’s ornament vocabulary.
