Fractures in the block of marble and such details as the missing forearm indicate that this is a reproduction of an ancient fragment. The drawing does not embellish or idealize, but rather emphasizes the flawed state of the original. At the time the drawing was made, the marble relief on which it is modelled had already been restored. Why, then, did the draughtsman pointedly choose to reproduce an earlier, damaged state?
