These drawings feature images of bucrania (bull skulls), various cultic implements, and naval trophies found on ancient reliefs dating from the Augustan period and arranged in bands. Of particular interest to artists were the images of antique ship’s rams, rudders, anchors, and stern ornaments – all rarely preserved in graphic form – which Piranesi repeatedly reused in his own decorative pictorial inventions.
