The laid paper used for the album’s leaves was made from rags (in effect plant fibres recovered from used clothing). The sheets of rag paper have slightly browned in the course of their natural ageing process. The paper was made in a paper mill in Ettlingen near Karlsruhe, which, although no longer in operation, can still be visited today and is known as the Buhlsche Mühle. Some leaves bear the watermark of mill owner F. Buhl.
