This red-chalk drawing shows a water spout with the face of a lion that adorned the Temple of the Dioscuri at the Roman Forum. This temple was dedicated to Castor and Pollux, known collectively as the Dioscuri, twin sons of Zeus and Leda. The temple dates from the 5th century BC, making it one of the oldest at the Forum. The fine penwork in the parallel hatching suggests this drawing is also the work of the French professional draughtsman of ornament designs Nicolas François Daniel Lhuillier (c. 1736–1793).
