Album 1, Leaf 46

This large-format drawing, folded in on three sides, shows a famous sculpture from Piranesi’s workshop, known as the Newdigate Candelabra. It is named after the English politician and collector of antiquities Sir Roger Newdigate (1719–1806), who acquired it from Piranesi and took it to England. It is now found at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The candelabra is a typical Piranesi hybrid of antique marble with modern additions. It was also included in his volume of etchings Vasi, candelabri, cippi sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne ed ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal Cav. Gio. Batta. Piranesi.
