Album 1, Leaf 45

This large-format drawing shows an altar or tripod excavated in Ostia in 1775 by the Scottish painter Gavin Hamilton (1723–1798). Piranesi’s workshop produced an etching of this richly decorated monument with a serpent moving up its flank.
